here’s the why

  • Some of the earliest reporting I was aware of as a child was the national coverage of the war in Afghanistan. At the time, I could not have known the significance of seeing some of the first visually documented wartime reporting. Since then, I have watched the massive shift in how things are reported and where people are getting their news, the waning trust that the general public has in journalists. It has been a multifaceted challenge to stay on top of the evolving modes of reporting, venues of publishing, and ways of telling the story. But the commitment to accuracy, objectivity, fairness, and the public’s right to know persists, and is what I love most.

  • Empathy is the core tenant of my storytelling philosophy. Making things understandable but also relatable to an audience makes everyone’s lived experience more tangible. I care a lot about making things intentionally so they communicate people’s experiences accurately, and strive to do so by thinking by about the subject, but also the vast diversity in reader experiences, and what they would ask or want to know.

  • Often thought of as the final step, design is often unjustly misunderstood. Since learning that the vast majority of the world learns best visually, I’ve felt that meeting audiences there is the best way to help them learn. Design can change the ease with which someone can understand, the communicated accuracy and reliability, and guide the over all experience of a piece. Employing graphics, design, and user experience intentionally is a crucial part of storytelling.

  • Grounding stories, design choices, and reporting in data makes it infinitely more reliable, but also allows the story team to know the limitations and bounds of the information they’re providing. Understanding statistics is crucial to creating accurate, communicative graphics, and is also good clean fun.
